The old adage, “All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy,” may not be quite accurate.  Jack may be dull, but he is probably burnt out as well.  Constructive activities that allow us to relax, become refreshed and gain a new outlook on life are important to our mental health, and need to be a part of our lives .  That is why we should all have interests and hobbies that allow us to get away from our work, spend time with our families and enjoy life.  Below, I have listed some of my interests and some of my hobbies.

My Greatest Interest:

I suppose the greatest interest in my life is my wife, Becky.  We will have been married four years in November, 2008.  David Schnarck, a sex and couples therapist, talks about dysfunctional and functionally marriage relationships and then he talks about the “blessed few.”  I feel that I am fortunate enough to be a part of the blessed few.  Becky is a wonderful woman who has brought excitement, challenges and dreams into my life and for that I will be forever grateful.

Other interests:

  • Computers:  Computers first came across my screen when I was in the first years of college.  I was going to be an engineer and we had to take a class called FORTRAN (it stands for formula translation).  It was an mathematical language that told the computer how to do formulas for engineering.  The computer was an old mainframe, and we programmed it using key punch cards.  I wasn’t very good at it.  It was not until the advent of the personal computers that I became interested in them and they quickly became a fascination for me.  I don’t really like playing games on the computer, but I do enjoy making them work the way I want them to and doing the things I want them to do.
  • Website Development:  I first began to use the Internet in its infancy as well when I began my Ph.D. program.  At that time, the modem connections were very slow and it took forever to us the Internet.  As it developed, however, and as the speed increased, I became interested in the Internet as an effective communication tool and began to master HTML and other Internet languages and programs to develop websites.  I began a website development business, and learning to develop better functioning and better looking websites has become a real interest of mine.
  • Teaching and Public Speaking:  I have taught college classes for a long time.  Classes I have taught include topics ranging from U.S. History to philosophy, from Eastern and Native American religion to Christian theology, from sociology to ethics.  I have spoken on a wide range of topics ranging from computers to ethics, from philosophy to counseling.  If you have a group and would like someone to speak to you about counseling interests, email me or give me a call and let me know.
  • Movies:  I am a movie junky.  I love movies.  My favorites are comedies, dramas and some action movies as long as there is not too much violence or gore in them.  I also have enjoyed some of the HBO series such as “Band of Brothers” and “Rome.”
  • Reading and Writing:  My wife says my library is too big!  However, I love to read and wish I had more time to do so.  I don’t read too many fiction books, but I love to read philosophy, ethics, religion/theology, history, biographies and of course, books on the counseling sciences.  I also love to write.  I hope to publish several books in the coming years and I constantly search for time that I may devote more energy to these projects.

Hobbies:

  • Skiing:  I grew upon in Idaho and lived most of my early life in Boise.  That was great because Bogus Basin Ski Resort was only about 40 miles away.  We were able to ski a lot and I skied on some ski teams in school and also taught some lessons.  When I moved to California to work on my first Master’s degree, skiing took a back burner to my studies and remained there until the completion of my Ph.D.  When I started dating Becky, however, she also loved skiing and we started going together.  Because I hadn’t skied for a long time, it was almost like starting over, but I am getting back to form now, and Becky and I love it.

  • Golf:  Becky has been golfing for much longer than I have and she is better at it than I am.  I don’t shoot a very low game, but I enjoy playing golf and I also enjoy the camaraderie of the other golfers.
  • Travel:  Becky and I love to travel and since Becky and I have been together, we have done more travel than I have done in the past.  Some of our favorite places are Maui, Victoria, British Columbia, Northern California, Eastern Pennsylvania and Washington, D.C.  We hope to take a cruise in the coming years and one of my dreams has been to travel to Europe.  I would especially enjoy going to Greece and Rome so that I could walk where Plato and the boys did.
  • Photography:  I have always been intrigued by good photographers and the magic they work with cameras.  I am nowhere close to their talent, but I enjoy working with photography and now that most cameras are digital, I don’t have to worry about wasting a bunch of film.  I now have the digital SLR camera and I am enjoying trying to hone my skills.
  • Camping and Hiking:  I used to do a lot of backpacking, but now most of our camping and hiking is a little less strenuous, although some of the day hike trails we have taken have been quite taxing.  At any rate, there is nothing like being in the outdoors and enjoying the beauty of nature.
